Art Deco Engagement Rings Dublin, Ireland

By

Art deco generally refers to a style primarily composed of geometrical forms, high symmetry, and stylisation of decorative motifs borrowed from nature.

The name is derived from the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, held in Paris in 1925.

It ties in with the general movement in women’s fashion at the time, which was away from elaborate and opulent curves, and towards strong, androgynous shapes. Hair was cut short, and smoothed down, dresses had stright lines, and often short hems.

Jewellery and rings reflected this. Many diamond rings from the era have straight diamond baguettes at the side, and are highly symmetrical. Gold gave way to white gold or platinum, and architectural motifs began to creep in to the design.

The first example of this is a white gold ring set with a central round diamond, and is a superb example of the style. The geometric form surrounds the diamond, and the shoulders are lightly engraved.

Another example is this ring, in platinum. It dates from circa 1930. The centre diamond is a 1.79 carat stone, certificated by the GIA. It is a different type to the first ring, slightly less elaborate, and was probably made in England. The twin diamond baguettes are a very unusual feature, in the way that they are laid side by side rather than one after another.

One final example is a classic Art deco engagement ring, set with baguette shoulders. One thing to notice is the slight arrowing at the end of the diamond baguette; this is very typical of the era, and avoids a “blocky” feeling to the ring. The centre diamond is a D colour.

ne final point to note, is that these rings all have high grade diamonds – it is not true that in the early part of the century that poor quality stones were used. Often, the diamonds used in jewellery in the 1920s and 1930s are of top grade, D/E/F colour.
